You can put paper on a 220 roll. I got about 12 frames in there. And then you can reverse process it with potassium dichromate. It's supposedly carcinogenic, so don't touch it.

I miraculously escaped the cold of Utah for the holiday season. Earlier this week I joined some of my family for a pleasant stroll through Muir Woods. I brought a camera and took a picture. I'll have to wait until I get back to the darkroom to develop it, but my photographic memory can tell you this much, it was something like this:

Sometimes (most of the time) I don't understand color. I just have a hard time getting it to do what I want.
This is an original photo with it's hideous default RAW color settings:

I accidentally applied some adjustments that only looked good when combined:

And also was trying to understand layer opacity and color channels in Photoshop and discovered a black and white setting that seemed to make skin tones more glow-rious. (get it? hahahaha....)

I wish I could say that I saw those things in mind's eye and then adjusted the photos, but such is not the case. Practice practice practice...

Our teacher brought a W magazine to our studio class last year to show us how sleazy the current market is, and to encourage us to fill the market with more wholesome work. Ironically, a set of images that were solarized (seemed kind of uncommon) caught my attention and it frequently finds itself sitting in the back of my mind whenever I'm editing. While cleaning off my memory card it seemed like this "happy accident" of an exposure check for my project about noses had potential, so into photoshop it went. I wanted to compare my solarization with the images from the magazine and was surprised at myself for somehow vaguely remembering that it was a louis vuitton ad. I just searched 'louis vuitton solarized ad' and managed to find it.

Turns out that it was shot by Steven Meisel. What I respect about Steven Meisel is that he doesn't have a "style". His "style" is coherent problem solving. He understands that a color palette or a quality of light is not the message, it's a vehicle for the message. He's the best because he understands what the client is trying to say, and then uses appropriate lighting and styling.

I think I've been writing so much about this because we've been discussing in our fine art class the risk of taking a step into the dark and doing something that isn't just a repeat of someone else's creativity. (Obviously I'm repeating creativity here, but Meisel seems to have made a risky decision) What I'm trying to say is - he took a risk and it seems to have paid off, because it really stuck in my mind. Sometimes risks work, sometimes they don't, but when they do, it sets you apart. I'm going to try to employ that more in my decision making.

(In all honesty, Steven Meisel was really just repeating Man Ray's creativity, but to copy Man Ray today is still somewhat of a step out into the dark)

I wanted to shoot something with a long exposure so that the quality of light would be a strip of light (sun moving across the sky), rather than just a dot in the sky. I think I'll need more than 2 hours to really get what I'm wanting.

(Even at f/64, iso 3, with a 10 stop ND filter on top of that, the exposure was only 2 hours. Usually reciprocity failure is a pain, but in this case it resulted in my image being underexposed, which means I can fit in another 2 stops or so and get the 8 hour exposure I've been wanting. Tomorrow, hopefully.)

This afternoon I shot the Draper temple for our religious edifice assignment.

I understand now why the green trees and grass didn't expose. It is not because the paper isn't responsive to green light, it's just that it was nearing sunset, and there isn't a whole lot of green light for the plants to reflect during sunset time. That was my aha moment for today.

Costa Rica Independence Day celebration up at a summer friend's cabin, great way to help celebrate the independence of nations everywhere!

That's my thumb in the bottom left corner (this was another paper negative),
the exclamation mark at the top is an interrupted long exposure of the moon (which was obviously trying to make a statement),
and those white dots near the bottom are lights from the otherwise unexposed cabin.

ilford multigradeIV fiber based paper turns out to be about iso 8. ish. I shot on it and then did a paper to paper contact print and it worked pretty well. Really cheap too... and you can make contact prints whatever size you have paper (I happen to have a 56" x 98' roll of it =) It's a potential medium for my fine art project this semester...

Take caution when buying old pola®oids. You might have to take 10 to get the paper to even feed out of the pola®oid back correctly. That comes out to about $10 a shot. But I got one... I finally got one to come out.

There are a few photos that I've produced in the past year that I truly enjoy viewing, and while they might not be favorites of anyone else, for me they're special, because these are the kinds of images I want to create, and this, I believe, means that there's hope.

For my Adv. Digital class (VAPHO 310) our final project was open for us to do whatever we wanted. I decided that I would explore a new process for myself, a little mock-up print ad campaign. For a company that sells hardwoods. Except that doesn't really make sense because I don't think any company that sells hardwoods would ever run an ad campaign. Nonetheless, it was fun/educational/fun.

I got a couple of awesome models and photographed their faces thinking I could use a grayscale copy of the image to create a depth map that would shift the pixels of a plain wood image to make it appear as though the wood had been carved to the shape of their face. It turns out that its probably easier to hire someone to create an actual 3D model of someone's face. I ended up pretty much painting the depth map with the help of my original 'depth map' image as a guide.

Then I put a grayscale copy of their face on top of it to simulate the wood 'carved out image' being lit the same way I actually lit their faces (soft light blend mode). I'm probably making this sound like it was more work than it was. It's just: Paint depth map, apply depth map to picture of wood, apply source image w/ soft light blend mode. (And then colorize. And maybe some curves.)

ANYway. Our class got to put all our projects up as a show on the 4th floor (west siiiide) in the HFAC.

The highlights are all wrong, I totally dropped in gradients on the middle section, the drip on the blade is misshapen, the drops at the bottom aren't even there, there's even a terrible dodge job on the bottom part. Let's just not mention how the lighting on the razor blade isn't even close. Talk about a work in progress...

Want to model for me? You'll get free MAC lipstick!!! It's just had a razor blade stuck in it, it's still good. I tried it. (just kidding, I didn't try it. But it is still good.)

It was kind of awkward hanging out at the lipstick section at Nordstrom... the clerk sure was helpful though =)

It turns out that lotion actually looks like butter unless you water it down. It took me 2 hours to figure that out.

I was actually supposed to shoot a dove bar floating in water... then I got this idea. I still have to shoot it floating in water. Maybe next week. (I'll definitely touch this one up, I need to go to bed for now.)

I had a couple of unfinished rolls of film that I brought to Chelsea & Bart's wedding. I developed and scanned them today.

Ilford HP5 is a modern miracle. That and Kodak E100G make me want to shoot all weddings with film.

It's a work in progress... I'll be re-shooting it soon. It's going to have the most unbelievably intense paisley-esque fabric behind it. Believe me, I've already scoped it out. I just didn't have time to buy it because I would have been late to class.

I'll have it done by next week. I have to. It's due by Thursday.

Chad Farnes spearheaded our voyage to L.A., where the CBS Studio is located, because, of course, we got tickets to The Price is Right.

Right now I'm still pretty distracted with my wonderful Y group, helping some freshmen get fresh with BYU... and familiar with BYU, too.

ANYway, I finally got some film picked up today, but the print lab on campus is closed this week, so I couldn't scan them, so I just photographed the negatives and was slightly unsuccessful with correcting the colors (they were all backwards, and blue, and... weird). SO, some are in black and white, others are just kinda whack, and I think there was one that was kinda close to normal.

The weather was a little threatening in Draper today when I arrived, and then calmed down just before Ashley and John came out of the temple. It probably calmed down because I showed up. Probably.

Nostalgia at its best

Yesterday I went to return a movie to the library and as I was on my way out, I decided to just take a quick stroll around some book shelves. I wasn't sure why. As I approached the first bookshelf, a book caught my eye, "Chicken Trek". I think I read that book three times while I was in elementary school. I realized that I was in the children's literature section and for the next 10 minutes I lived in the blissful past. I spotted a few other childhood treasures like George and Martha, Stone Soup, and The Berenstain Bears. I felt pretty happy remembering those things. I think I should try to remember them more often. I might even go back and visit. =) Can you remember any of your favorite childhood classics?

In my Intro to Advertising class my group has been working on a project. We're preparing an ad campaign for Jones Soda Co. My group members came up with the ideas for the print ads and I finally made them today.

(This is actually 3D, I thought it was a cool idea. Something to do while you're at the bus stop)
